Nuc or swarm: what are you buying?

Before buying bees, clarify the format, the composition of the colony and the delivery conditions.

What is a bee nuc?

A nuc is a small colony on frames, with a queen, adult bees, brood and food stores. Frame count alone is not enough: ask what each frame contains and how well it is covered with bees.

What is a swarm

In a biological sense, it is the group of bees that separates from a colony during swarming. In trade, an established nuc is sometimes called a "swarm." That is why you have to ask for a specific description, not just the name.

Five points to make a purchase

  1. Format: frame type and dimensions; check compatibility with your hive.
  2. Content: frames with brood, food stores and adult bees.
  3. Queen: available information about her origin, age and egg laying.
  4. Background: handling and documentation accompanying delivery.
  5. Pickup: date, box, transportation and final price.

Is the nuc box included?

It should not be taken for granted. At Finca Lady Marso, the box is agreed separately: the buyer can provide a compatible one or consult their purchase. The cost of bees and frames must be distinguished from the container.
